South Manchester Synagogue

Welcome to South Manchester Synagogue

Welcome to the website of South Manchester Synagogue.
The first Orthodox Synagogue in South Manchester, founded in 1872, we are now situated in the leafy village of Bowdon, close to Altrincham, Hale Village and Manchester Airport.
After a long successful history in the Chorlton-on-Medlock and Fallowfield districts of Manchester with charismatic leaders such as Rabbi Felix Carlebach and Chazan Solomon Morris, the congregation moved in 2002 to state-of-the-art new premises in Bowdon under the leadership of Rabbi Yitzchok Rubin and Chazan Michael Isdale. We have the unique distinction of being the only Synagogue in the United Kingdom to have been opened by royalty, with an official visit by HRH Prince of Wales in April 2003.
In January 2011 following on from the retirement of Rabbi Rubin, the Synagogue appointed Rabbi Dovid Lewis as its new Rabbi, and he together with his wife Nachi and children Chaya and Tzivia moved into the community in June 2011 to take up their roles.
The community provides rabbinic leadership encompassing all age ranges together with a thriving and innovative educational and social programme.
The congregation has been known as a warm, caring and welcoming one for many decades, and this tradition has continued in its new home where it has welcomed many new members, both Ashkenazi and Sephardi.
The large number of young families and their children enliven our services. Children are encouraged to take part in our services, with regular children’s services and youth minyanim, participation in Anim Zemirot, and a monthly Big Birthday Kiddush.
We also have a strong pastoral support team comprising  our Rabbi, his wife, Chazan Michael Isdale and lay members of the community, all available at any time to provide comfort, advice and support.
2012 saw  the 140th Anniversary of the Community which continues to have an exciting future. We look forward to welcoming new members of all ages to our community and our beautiful building.
